Partners in Health has been working to bring a preferential option for the poor in Haiti for the last 20 years. They have built a medical infrastructure that has enabled them to be among the first to respond after the earthquake. I became familiar with PIH after reading Mountains Beyond Mountians by Tracey Kidder. It is the story of how Dr. Paul Farmer came to build his life’s work in Haiti. It is an excellent introduction to Haiti’s medical history and the country’s infrastructure prior to this latest disaster. It helps you understand Haiti’s baseline, and how much aid it will take to get back to that point—let alone improve.
Please spread the word in your social networks to donate to the relief efforts in Haiti.
