Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public OpenCourseWare:

http://ocw.jhsph.edu/

From their FAQ page:

What is JHSPH OpenCourseWare?

The philosophy behind JHSPH OCW is to make JHSPH course materials now used in the teaching of almost all undergraduate and graduate subjects available on the Web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world. JHSPH OCW will not only advance technology-enhanced education at JHSPH, but it will also serve as a model for universities to disseminate knowledge in the Internet age. This venture builds on the tradition at JHSPH, and in American higher education, of open dissemination of educational materials, philosophy and modes of thought, and will help lead to fundamental changes in the way colleges and universities use the Web as a vehicle for education.

Now I’m trying to figure out where to start, because this is amazing. Thanks, Internet.

Building Advocacy Skills for Social Change: The Nuts and Bolts of Policy Advocacy

An online training module from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. I  also completed Introduction to Epidemiology and Culture and Health Literacy: Beyond Access.

Click here for a full list of trainings. This module contained video lectures by Jeff Nachbar, the Public Policy Director of the Brian Injury Association of Minnesota. This module provides an overview of the basics of health policy and advocacy to advance social change.

It was really interesting to hear about the advocacy process from the legislators themselves. Representative Karen Clark of the Minnesota House of Representatives had some great insights, and urges citizens to identify and contact their representatives.

As a former public health nurse, OB/GYN nurse practitioner and VISTA nurse-organizer, she implores public health activists to consider tax policy as a public health issue.

Back to School (and it feels so good)
Only a year out of undergrad, here I am back in school. This time around, I’m completing a certificate in phlebotomy. I am taking Applied A & P, Medical Terminology, Interpersonal Communications and Orientation to Health Care and I’m loving it so far. As someone who has been passionate about health, I did not take a single health science related course during my undergrad. Instead, I was somewhat of a misfit in my math courses. I can’t say that I regret majoring in math, because it shaped who I am today. But I can say that I’m pretty much overjoyed to be in health related classes. I’m just soaking up all this new knowledge that will be so useful when I start my nurse practitioner prerequisites in the spring.

Blogging to Enhance Learning in Public Health Courses

Really interesting article in the American Journal of Public Health, Using Seminar Blogs to Enhance Student Participation and Learning in Public Health School Classes.

Conclusions

Small seminar blogs offer opportunities for increasedstudent participation, interaction, and learning. To be mosteffective and appealing, assignments for postings need to allowsufficient time for commentary. This educational technologyhas potential to expand the classroom experience and is worthyof further development and testing.

Suffolk University Full Tuition Scholarship for Masters in Women’s Health Program

Suffolk University offers a full tuition scholarship for students committed to working in the field of Black women’s health.

More information:

By virtually every marker of health and health care status, African American women suffer unjustly. African American women are less likely than white women to have health insurance and are more likely to be dependent upon the political vagaries of Medicaid policies. African American women confront particularly high rates of cervical cancer, diabetes, hypertension, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS infection, and maternal mortality. For these patterns to change:

  • Government policies need to redress longstanding racial disparities in health care access.

  • Medical institutions need to develop programs that improve patient care for Black women.

  • Health care providers need to cultivate communication skills that show respect for the strengths and diversity of Black women and that acknowledge financial limitations that may interfere with health maintenance.

  • Community leaders need to work towards building environments that are safe and healthy for Black women and their families.

  • Educators need to address how African American women can make the healthy choices that facilitate healthy minds and bodies.

  • African American women need training in self-care and self-advocacy.

If you are passionate about Women’s Health apply today. Suffolk has received a very low number of applications, so they seek to publicize this opportunity. The application deadline has been extended to June 30.

University of Minnesota Centers for Public Health Education and Outreach Continuing Education Courses

Taking the Introduction to Epidemiology module online at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Center of Public Health Eduation and Outreach was a great experience.

I’m impressed by this unique, high quality online experience. I think it is an excellent resource for public health professionals and students of all levels.

The content met my needs, the navigation was intuitive, you can download the entire module as a pdf at the end and you get your certificate online right away.

I’m looking forward to completing more modules.
